Thursday 15th September
Today we had a full free day in Barcelona to explore. This morning at8.30, Ellie was offering a walking tour of the city for an hour and a half. Our hostel was centrally located so we were able to walk rather than have to be dropped in the city by the coach.
Barcelona is famous for Gaudi architecture, and we saw a couple of his famous works on our walking tour;
And Casa Batlló
Then we walked over to the gothic quarter, and saw the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia – this was another massive beautiful church, but I didn’t go inside. The streets in the Gothic Quarter were really beautiful, with lovely buildings and pretty arches like the one below.
The tour ended outside La Boqueria which is apparently one of Europe’s largest and one of the most famous food markets. It’s located about halfway up La Rambla (the main street in Barcelona) and I highly highly recommend a visit here if you’re in Barcelona. It is the most amazing market I’ve seen in my life! Stalls offering fresh fruit, marzipan, fresh juice and smoothies, breads, pastries.. everything you can imagine! My tip for La Boqueria is don’t buy stuff from the stalls right near the entrance, i.e fruit, because the stalls a few metres into the market have the same stuff for cheaper! I was so happy to finally eat some fresh fruit! I also bought a little bottle of Sangria, and then had a chocolate banana waffle on a stick.
The market was amazing, I could stay there all day eating food! I want to go back to Barcelona just for the market! However, with only one day in the city, we couldn’t stay there all day so we headed back to the Gothic Quarter to wander the streets and look at the shops.
I discovered Kiko in Barcelona, which is an Italian makeup brand – good quality makeup for cheap prices! I didn’t do too much shopping though because I still had a few weeks left on my trip and only a small suitcase. After wandering around for a few hours, we started getting really hungry so we went to Mcdonald’s for an afternoon snack before getting a taxi back to the hostel. We had an included dinner in the hostel at 7.30pm – I can’t remember what it was, maybe burgers? Then we chilled in our room and packed our bags as we had a pretty early wake-up call tomorrow.
