I’ve lived in Auckland my entire life – all 26 years of it, and it’s safe to say I love this city.
My friend from Perth was on a cruise that was docking in Auckland for a day and I caught up with her to show her some of the sites. It was a great opportunity to be a tourist in my own city and to try out my new Sony Action Cam (HDR-AS20) that I plan to take to Europe!
Summer in Auckland is the best. A lot of people who live in Auckland choose to go out of the city for summer but for those that stay (and those that are visiting), there are lots of places to go and things to do in the summer sun.
Probably the number one attraction in Auckland City is the Sky Tower – it held the title of tallest building in the southern hemisphere for a short time and has amazing views of Auckland, especially on a beautiful clear day like the day we visited.
To visit the Sky Tower it’s $28 for an adult. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can do the Sky Walk or the Sky Jump for an additional cost.
For great views of the Harbour Bridge, you can walk alongside Westhaven Marina (the largest marina in the southern hemisphere – It’s not called the City of Sails for nothing!). You also get great views of the Sky Tower from here as well.
My favourite place to take people in Auckland is Mission Bay. The drive along the water to the beach is just beautiful and you get a fantastic view of Rangitoto Island and some nice views of the city along the way as well. Mission Bay is a popular spot in Summer and it can be quite hard to find parking so I suggest getting there early if you can. There are lots of nice restaurants along Mission Bay but my pick would be fish n chips from the Fish Pot – the best fish and chips in Auckland (and probably the most expensive too!). But you can’t beat fish n chips on the beach, with a froyo from Kiwi Yo or an ice cream from Movenpick for dessert. Mission Bay is also a great place to hire bikes or rollerblades and ride along the water.
Another great spot for restaurants in Auckland is Wynyard Quarter. Located near the popular Viaduct Basin, Wynyard Quarter is home to a number of great restaurants. A lot of them offer outdoor seating with a view out to the marina. My personal favourite here is Jack Tar and I love to sit outside with a cold drink and a great meal watching people walk by.
Another great place in Auckland to visit is Waiheke Island. You have to catch the ferry from the terminal at the bottom of the city to the island and a return fare is $36.00 per adult. Waiheke Island, located about 35 minutes from the city, is a great summer destination. There are amazing beaches, great restaurants and a number of vineyards. It’s a great place for a day trip.
Auckland is a great place to visit and I hope I’ve made it sound that bit more appealing! I had a lot of fun testing out my new action cam and made up the wee little video below (my first go at editing!)
